A perfect way to incorporate art into daily rituals

Adrienne is a sculptor and artist based in Seattle. He studied ceramics at the California College of the Arts. He is a very talented and creative person and we think he is a real pro at making ceramics with super realistic faces. He says there is no secret meaning behind these faces, he just likes doing it. Adrien says it’s not his job to add meaning to his projects, each person will find their own meaning in it.

The only thing that is intentional is the facial expression, he doesn’t get angry or anything. Adrien wants the facial expression to be soothing and somehow serene so that they can hopefully bring a sense of peace, quiet and tranquility to the lives of the people who buy his work. He just likes the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčintegrating art into everyday life, and since eating and drinking is a daily ritual for all of us, it only makes sense to integrate art into cups and plates.

So how does Adrienne make these lovely plates? Well, it’s actually a pretty easy process. It starts with a potter’s wheel, as any other potter would when making a piece of pottery.

He makes a plate or a cup or a bowl, whatever he thinks of that day. And then, after everything is almost ready, Adrien starts sculpting faces by hand. In some cases, he uses faces of people he knows, in others – just faces with certain facial expressions.

Once he was satisfied with the shape, he used tools to add more detail to the faces, to make deeper and more precise lines, to bring out the features more clearly. Then he simply biscuit-bakes the plates and covers them with glaze.

Sometimes he will make plates that are all white, sometimes he will choose a color or two. When inspiration strikes, Adrien will make multicolored pieces. It all depends on how he feels at the moment and what he wants to do with a particular piece of art.

We would also like to point out that while we have focused on his ceramics, Adrien also makes glass sculptures and he creates real sculptures, not just plates. In his spare time, he also enjoys yoga and skateboarding. He’s actually quite a charming guy and doesn’t seem to be one to stick to just one thing. He likes to explore and try new things and experience life in many ways. If you want to check out more of his work, definitely check out his Instagram.
